Train Station + Landscape

Madrid, Spain | 2007

The Chamartin station is a terminus, and though it is an important point of connection to other cities and countries, it (and its rail yard) are a source of dis-junction in the urban context. In the design of the new station, and a park replacing the rail yard, the sequence of programs were thought of as a continuous landscape. The idea of linking or weaving together urban zones, for a stronger connection between city, park, arrival and departure was achieved through a striated topography, with gradual shifts in elevation to facilitate circulation.
